Land
\nThe state\u00a0is often <\/span>divided broadly into four natural divisions: the northern plateau, the Eastern Ghats, the central tract,\u00a0and therefore the\u00a0<\/span>coastal plains. The northern plateau is an extension of the forest-covered and mineral-rich Chota Nagpur plateau centered in Jharkhand. The Eastern Ghats, extending roughly parallel to the coast and rising to an elevation of about 3,600 feet (1,100 meters), are remnants of a really\u00a0<\/span>ancient line of hills in eastern peninsular India. The central track comprises a series of plateaus and basins occupying the inland area to the west and north of the Eastern Ghats; the plateau areas provide scant resources, but several of the basins\u2014notably the Kalahandi, Balangir, Hirakud, and Jharsuguda\u2014have the soil and therefore the\u00a0<\/span>irrigation facilities to support local agriculture. The\u00a0land\u00a0<\/span>s are formed of alluvial soils deposited by\u00a0the various\u00a0<\/span>rivers flowing to the Bay of Bengal; locally\u00a0the world\u00a0<\/span>is understood\u00a0<\/span>because of the <\/span>Balasore (Baleshwar) coastal plain to the northeast, the Mahanadi River delta\u00a0within the\u00a0<\/span>center, and therefore the\u00a0<\/span>Chilka plain to the southwest.<\/p>\n

Climate
\nOdisha\u00a0is found\u00a0<\/span>during a\u00a0<\/span>climatic region\u00a0referred to as\u00a0<\/span>tropical wet-dry (or tropical savanna). In January,\u00a0the good\u00a0<\/span>month, high temperatures in Cuttack typically rise into the mid-80s F (about 30 \u00b0C) from\u00a0a coffee\u00a0<\/span>within the\u00a0<\/span>mid-50s F (low 10s C). In May, the warmest month, temperatures usually reach the mid-90s F (mid-30s C) from\u00a0a coffee\u00a0<\/span>within the\u00a0<\/span>low 70s F (low 20s C).\u00a0the upper\u00a0<\/span>elevations of the hills provide some relief from the summer heat, which becomes particularly oppressive\u00a0within the\u00a0<\/span>basins of the central tract. Average annual rainfall\u00a0within the\u00a0<\/span>state is about 60 inches (1,500 mm), mostly occurring during the months of the southwest monsoon (June through September).
